Android 16 Beta 2 Lets You Double Press the Power Button to Open Google Wallet

Android users now have a new way to quickly access Google Wallet with the latest Android 16 Beta 2 update. Previously, double pressing the power button on a Pixel phone would always open the camera app, but now, users can choose to launch Google Wallet instead.

A More Convenient Way to Access Google Wallet

Google Wallet is a widely used app for storing credit cards, transit passes, and other essential items. While users have been able to open the app via home screen shortcuts, Quick Settings tiles, or the lock screen shortcut, the ability to launch it with a double press of the power button provides a faster and more intuitive method.

With the Android 16 Beta 2 update, a new setting allows users to change the default action of the double press power button shortcut. This setting can be found under Settings > System > Gesture > Double Tap Power Button. Previously, this section was labeled “Quickly Open Camera,” but it has now been updated to allow users to choose between launching the Pixel Camera app or Google Wallet.

Enhanced Security for Wallet Access

For security reasons, when users double press the power button to open Google Wallet while their phone is locked, they will need to unlock their device first before viewing their stored cards. This prevents unauthorized access to sensitive payment information while maintaining quick accessibility for users.

First Spotted in Android 15 Beta, Now Live in Android 16

This new feature was initially seen in the third beta release of Android 15’s second quarterly update. However, Google has officially introduced it as part of Android 16 Beta 2, making it accessible to a wider range of Pixel users testing the beta software.
